The Nashville Predators are looking to make a playoff push and are trying to make an impact with their top-end talent.
Head coach Peter Laviolette said Wednesday he’s looking to add an offensive defenseman to his lineup, and he’s hoping to get the kind of player the Kings are after.
The Predators traded defenseman Mattias Ekholm to the Kings on Wednesday in a four-player deal that included a 2018 third-round pick.
The Kings had previously sent Ekholm and a 2019 second-round draft pick to the Nashville in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.
Kovalchuk had 10 goals and 15 assists in 51 games for the Kings this season.
Ekholm is coming off a career year in which he scored 42 goals and added 37 assists for 57 points in 76 games.
The Kings had a two-year, $5.75 million deal with Ekholm that included no salary cap hit.
